Frequently Asked Questions
Please review the following file specs to make sure the artwork you send is formatted correctly. Any additional file formatting requested for printing can be done by our studio at our hourly studio rate of $85/hour. Here are a few additional questions specific to submitting your own design for printing.
-
We use Adobe Illustrator for our letterpress plates. Therefore, we require .ai files or .pdf files that can be opened in Adobe Illustrator.
Note: All fonts should be outlined before exporting, and all images/graphics should be fully vectorized. The artwork should be the final size we’re printing and save all of the text in outlines. If you need a return address printed on an envelope, you will need to send us the file for this as well.

Savoy cotton paper is my preferred stock for most letterpress jobs. I keep the fluorescent white on hand in both the 118# and 236# weights.
In the past few years, specific stock has run out & been greatly delayed in the import process. If this is the case, I may substitute a similar stock (like Crane’s Lettra) as needed. If you need a specific stock for your job, feel free to let me know.

All graphic and logo files need to be in vector format (such as .eps files or .ai files).
If you’re interested in having your artwork digitized (calligraphy, illustrations, etc.) I’m happy to help!
Send me a sample of your artwork in order to receive a quote.

Printing of large, solid areas or floods of color with our presses can be difficult. We also cannot print areas with knock-out white type.
We require a minimum stroke weight for fine lines is .40 point.
Blind embossing is printing with clear or no ink. The effect can be difficult to read for a business card and recommend a tonal embossing instead if you are interested in a very subtle effect.
-
You can specify a Pantone PMS color (solid uncoated line) for your project. We do not match a CMYK color. If you don't have access to a Pantone book and have a specific color in mind, you may provide a printed swatch and we will mix the ink to match.
-
We discourage clients from selecting double sided printing for letterpress as the debossed impression that is so characteristic of letterpress printing becomes compromised.
-
No. We send a final digital proof in pdf form for clients to approve and sign off on. We don’t offer a letterpress printed proof for approval as the set up and inking process makes this cost prohibitive. If you have any hesitation about the way your design or color will translate, we encourage you to reach out with your concerns so we make sure we're a good fit and can print what you're hoping for.
-
Once we have all of your project details, have sent you a pdf proof to review and approve, we need 2-3 weeks to complete the letterpress printing. If you have a deadline, we recommend mentioning this when you first reach out so we can make sure we'll be able to deliver your print project in time.
