The Democratic Knowledge Project
The Democratic Knowledge Project (DKP) is a K-16 civic education provider based at Harvard University’s Edmond J. Safra Center for Ethics, both directed by Dr. Danielle Allen. In close partnership with educators, the DKP has co-designed an open-source, year-long 8th-grade civics curriculum, “Civic Engagement in Our Democracy.”
Affectionately named “DKP” within the core team, we felt very strongly about activating these initials into the primary wordmark. The DKP lettermark was created using a customized weight and letters of Whitney Font which is a humanist, friendly and highly readable sans serif font. The letter p is purposely lengthened to express verticality, a sense of action and boldness. The wordmark, Democratic Knowledge Project, is nested tightly creating a formidable graphic form.
The color purple was selected as DKP’s primary color because of its symbolic reflection of bipartisan unity. While Americans views on political and ideological issues are as diverse as its diversely ethnic landscape, these beliefs are grounded in a deep love for their country. Thus, the color purple is the ideal choice to reflect this diversified union of voice through the combination of the two primary colors - red, a color of passion, and blue, a color for stability.
